I was drinking coffee this morning when I saw my
sunglasses crawl away. The coffee was done, drained
from its cup, and the cafe was still quiet at 7am.
My eyes were on the newspaper, my sunglasses on the
table, when suddenly- without warning- they bolted.

I watched in the blurry background of my vision as
they moved to the edge of the table in a blind run
for freedom. Then they disappeared, shimmying down
the table with all the ebullience of liberty won.
But something was there to stop them.

My impulses were quick- I'd eaten two bowls of peanut
butter soup for breakfast- and I caught them under
the heel of my shoe. Pinned to the ground, the sun-
glasses froze. I crushed them underfoot. The sound
of splintering plastic drew a server's attention.
I had to leave, fast.

The day was bright, and things looked different without
my glasses.
