Would you consider yourself a nostalgic person?

Birthday parties: they were great when they were
standardized. There was always something to make
(tie-dye shirt, spin art), games to play, pizza,
singing, birthday cake. Capped off with a bag of
party favors. Everything in that order and without
fail. The basic characteristics of a child were
all addressed-- curiosity, energy, appetite,
recognition, greed.

Given that these characteristics don't change too
much (except maybe the first two), it should be
easy to update the children's birthday formula for
adulthood. Why don't we do this? Birthdays at my
age are either ignored or celebrated with a
semi-stressful dinner or a bar outing which
everyone quickly forgets.

Appetite is easy to cover. Anything greasy will
do. Grease is a sign of celebration.

Recognition in the form of singing is a little
embarrassing, but a set of flattering digital
photographs of everyone having fun can be posted
on a social network with hilarious captions.

As for Greed, the host could invest in a bunch
of Lotto scratchers to give out as party favors.
The ideal low-risk high-excitement unisex party
favor.
