ON THE REDNECK RIVIERA

I. A native Floridian is charming
if you can catch him alone. The accent,
the love of booze and nation, the soda
cans packed like Tetris pieces in a
cooler. The charm lessens when there
is a group of them, and it disappears
entirely when there is a crowd. Why?

II. In the grocery store I am browsing
cans of local specialties: Skillet Corn,
Hoppin' John, Okra in Ham. When I
make my purchases the check-out girl,
Earleen, asks me if them things are
good. I say I don't know yet but I will
find out soon. She asks me to tell her
if they're good because she's always
wondered.

"I work on Saturdays so can you come
back then?" she asks."After 11 AM?"

III. Alligator sighting!
