BEHAVE YOURSELF

I'm watching this pretty girl in Starbucks.
She has a direct gaze and looks like a
catfish. I picture her in the depths of a
muddy lake, bottom-feeding. She looks at
me.

I keep staring because I am in a bold
mood. The second time she looks at me
I am still watching her, and now we both
know it.

Then she does something funny with her
scarf, stretching it in front of her
face and bonking her nose against it.
Her foot wiggles. Oh, I think. She's
nervous. She's reacting to my stare.

She looks up again and meets my eye.
And then once more. After the fourth
time she abruptly stops fidgeting
and relaxes. I think I know why. She
has figured out that I'm not looking
at her in appraisal or dislike, but
simply because she's pretty and looks
like a catfish.
